Handmade Paper II

A new series of handmade paper created in January and March of 2015 at Dieu Donne in New York City.  With the help and expertise of master papermaker and Studio Collaborator Lisa Switalski I was able to realize 16 new handmade paper pieces to be featured in my next exhibition entitled Seamless Belonging. These works were inspired by everything from Islamic patterning, Renaissance velvets, to bee honeycombs.

“Natural texture and abstract texture, ie ornament, have a depth, not of space but of surface”  states Lars Spuybrook in his book The Sympathy of Things. He argues for ornament and structure becoming one. I see that happening with the handmade paper because the surface is the structure. The patterns are not just applied but actually part of the paper as well.
